The CFA Requirement That Can Quietly Void Your Exam Results (And How to Clear It in a Weekend)

The CFA Requirement That Can Quietly Void Your Exam Results (And How to Clear It in a Weekend)
Jean Benoit

Picture this. You sit the CFA® exam, walk out reasonably confident, and wait the usual weeks for results day. Then the email arrives, and instead of a score, you're told your results are being withheld because you never completed a requirement you didn't know existed.

It happens every cycle. Since 2024, every CFA candidate must complete a Practical Skills Module (PSM) at each level, and it is not optional: if it isn't finished by the results-release date, CFA Institute withholds your results entirely. For August 2026 candidates, that clock is already running.

The reassuring part is that a PSM is completely within your control, takes a single focused weekend, and, approached the right way, actually makes you a sharper analyst. Here's everything you need to make sure a missed module never stands between you and your score.

What Exactly Is a Practical Skills Module?

The CFA Program has always been strong on theory. The PSM is CFA Institute's answer to a long-standing criticism: that passing the exam didn't prove you could actually do the work. Each module blends short videos, guided practice, multiple-choice questions, and realistic case studies to turn curriculum concepts into hands-on skills employers care about.

Think of it less as another exam and more as a practical workshop:

  • It's online and self-paced, completed through your CFA Institute candidate account.
  • It's graded on completion, not on a pass/fail score: you work through it rather than sit it.
  • It builds applied skills (financial modeling, data analysis, portfolio construction) depending on the module you choose.

You complete one module per level, and you cannot reuse the same module at a later level, so your choices compound as you progress.

The Rule That Catches Candidates Off Guard: No PSM, No Results

Here is the single fact every candidate needs burned into memory: you must complete one PSM at your level before the results-release date, or your exam results are voided.
  • It applies at every level. Levels I, II, and III each require their own module.
  • It's tied to your results, not the exam itself. You can sit the exam without having touched your PSM, but you won't see a score until it's done.
  • Miss the results-release deadline and the attempt is forfeited. There's no partial credit for a nearly finished module.

One genuine reassurance: if you sit an exam and don't pass, you do not have to redo the PSM when you retake that level. You only complete a new module when you advance to the next level.

Your Module Options by Level

You choose one module from a short menu at each level. The options are designed to build progressively, from foundational tools at Level I to portfolio-level application at Level III.

Level I: Build Your Foundation

Choose one:

  • Financial Modeling: hands-on Excel modeling, the single most requested skill in entry-level finance roles.
  • Python Programming Fundamentals: an introduction to the language increasingly used across analysis and reporting.

For most candidates targeting analyst or research roles, Financial Modeling is the higher-leverage choice.

Level II: Deepen Your Analytical Toolkit

Choose one:

  • Analyst Skills: applied valuation and analytical judgment.
  • Python Programming Fundamentals: if you skipped it at Level I.
  • Python, Data Science, and AI: for candidates who want to work with data at scale.

Level III: Apply It at the Portfolio Level

Level III options centre on portfolio construction and increasingly align with the new specialized pathways. Expect choices such as Portfolio Development and Construction alongside pathway-relevant applied modules. Because the Level III menu is the most likely to change year to year, confirm the current options inside your CFA Institute account before you commit.

Rule of thumb: pick the module whose skill you'll actually use at work, not the one that looks easiest. The whole point is applied capability, so you may as well bank a skill you can put on your CV.

How Long Does a PSM Take, and When Should You Do It?

Each module takes roughly 10 to 20 hours, realistically a focused weekend or a few evenings spread across a fortnight. The timing question is where candidates go wrong. Two principles keep you safe:

  • Don't let it eat your exam prep. Your priority before the exam is the exam. A PSM is required for results, not for sitting, so it shouldn't steal hours from mocks and question practice in your final weeks.
  • Don't leave it dangerously late either. The sweet spot for many candidates is the window just after the exam: the material is fresh, the pressure is off, and you clear the requirement well before results day.

You can start a PSM the moment your exam registration is confirmed. If you're the type who forgets things, doing it early and getting it off your plate is a perfectly valid strategy.

Five PSM Mistakes That Cost Candidates

  • Not knowing it exists. The most expensive mistake of all: discovering the requirement only after results are withheld.
  • Assuming it's optional. It isn't. "Mandatory" means your results depend on it.
  • Leaving it to the final days before results. Technical issues, a busy week at work, or simply underestimating the hours can push you past the deadline.
  • Picking the easiest-looking module. You're investing 10 to 20 hours either way, so choose the skill that advances your career.
  • Planning to reuse a module. You can't repeat the same module across levels, so sequence your choices deliberately.

Turn a Requirement Into an Advantage

It's easy to resent the PSM as one more hoop. Reframe it. Recruiters increasingly ask CFA candidates to prove applied skills like modeling, Python, and data fluency, not just theory. The PSM hands you a structured, CFA Institute-backed way to build exactly those skills, plus a concrete line for your CV. Candidates who treat it as free professional development, rather than administrative box-ticking, get the most out of it.

And the deeper your curriculum mastery, the faster these modules go. Everything in a PSM is easier when the underlying concepts are already second nature, which is exactly what disciplined, structured exam preparation gives you.

Your Move This Week

  • Log into your CFA Institute account and confirm the PSM requirement and module menu for your level.
  • Choose the module whose skill you'll actually use, and note the results-release deadline for your exam window.
  • Block a weekend to complete it. If you're sitting in August, plan that weekend now, before results season.
