CIA Exam Overview

To earn the CIA® credential, you need to pass the three-part exam administered by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA)

You will need to achieve a minimum score of 600 (out of 700) on each part. The IIA offers exams in many languages, get in touch to see which languages are currently available.

Essentials of Internal Auditing
    Duration: 2.5 hours
    Format: Computer-based testing,
    Exam : 125 questions

Part III
Business Knowledge for Internal Auditing
    Duration: 4 hours
    Format: Computer-based testing
    Exam : 100 questions
    Testing Windows: Year-round
    Topic Weights:
    • 35% Business Acumen
    • 25% Information Security
    • 20% Information Technology 
    • 20% Financial Management




Education & experience requirements

To register to the exams

You need to hold an Associate’s degree or higher and to justify :

  • If you hold a Master’s Degree (or equivalent): 12 months of internal auditing experience or its equivalent
  • If you hold a Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent): 24 months of internal auditing experience or its equivalent
  • If you hold an Associate’s Degree, A-Level Certificate (or equivalent): 60 months of internal

To get your licence

Once you passed the three-part exam you will need to :

  • Submit a Character Reference Form signed by a CIA, CGAP, CCSA, CFSA, CRMA, or your supervisor
  • Meet the experience requirements
  • Abide by the Code of Ethics established by The IIA

To maintain your certification you will need to report some Continuing Professional Education (CPE).
